COVID-19 Lockdown: No Rent to be taken from Migrant Workers directs Home Minister

The Home Ministry has asked the state and UTs governments to ensure that the landlords do not demand any rent from migrant workers for 1 month. Also as per the National Disaster Management Act, employers are bound to pay their workers’ wages without any deduction on the due date, failing to which strict action will be taken.

PS Srivastava, Home Secretary has also asked the States to direct District Magistrates & Superintendents of Police to ensure proper food, shelter and full wages by employers amid the 21-day lockdown period. 

The country is under lockdown till April 14, 2020 to counter COVID-19 through social distancing. The 21- day lockdown has majorly impacted lives of migrant workers and daily wagers who have lost their jobs and have no means to sustain their livelihood.
